Falls

$1,500.00

36 x 48 oil on canvas.

The North Carolina mountains are renowned for their waterfalls. Dupont State Forest, in particular, hosts some of the state's most iconic falls. The beautiful Bridal Veil Falls is in Dupont and made a cameo in the classic film The Last of the Mohicans.

When I began painting this piece, the sound of Upper Falls off Rt. 181 heading up to Linville Gorge ran through my memory. From a distance, you hear the strength and majesty of the falls rinsing throughout the woods. I wanted to capture the movement and sound in a painting. I know that sounds impossible, but it’s the reaching for nature’s glory that keeps us inspired and pressing into the wonder of the wilds.

This is one of my favorite pieces and sits on our mantle at home. Guests always ask where I purchased it. When I say it’s an original, great conversation ensues. That’s what waterfalls do, don’t they? They spark our imaginations with so much wonder we can’t help talking about their beauty. But we also talk about how violent and dangerous they are. Perhaps my favorite aspect of nature is that it is untamed. The feeling a waterfall gives you cannot be bottled up and mass-produced. It is unique to you.

The wildness of falls draws me to them, teaching me respect and humility while drawing me toward their strength and otherness.
